To assist each student in reaching his/her potential, the following Gifted Services are offered for the 2005-2006 school year:

Intervention Services, Grades K-6

Services for students who are gifted with Superior Cognitive, Specific Academic, or Creative Thinking Ability

Gifted Intervention Specialists provide support to teachers as they plan and implement strategies and activities in accordance with students’ Written Education Plans. These are integrated services that take place in the classroom and are closely connected with the curriculum. Basic elements are differentiated instruction and the use of higher level thinking skills.

Primary Intervention Services, Grades K-2

Services for students who are gifted with Superior Cognitive and/or Specific Academic Abilities in Reading/Writing and/or Mathematics

In addition to Intervention Services, these students are also provided with weekly lessons taught by a GIS both in the context of their classroom and in the context of a resource room. The focus for this group of students is the development of higher level thinking skills, cross-curricular problem-solving skills, and extension of the regular classroom curriculum in their area(s) of identification. Students participating in this program receive Progress Reports quarterly.

Intermediate Intervention Services, Grades 3-6

Services for students who are gifted with Superior Cognitive and/or Specific Academic Abilities in Reading/Writing or Mathematics

Students leave their classrooms for two sessions a week per area of identification to meet with a GIS. During this time with their ability peers, students explore theme-based differentiated curriculum, pursue Independent Studies, participate in activities that enrich and extend the regular curriculum, further develop higher order thinking skills and cross-curricular problem-solving skills, and begin to learn self-actualization and metacognitive skills. This service is provided at each of the elementary schools and is in addition to the Intervention Services for all K-8 students. Students participating in this program receive Progress Reports quarterly.

Self-Contained Class, Grades 5 & 6

Services for students who are gifted with a combination of Superior Cognitive and documented classroom performance as demonstrated on State-level testing

This is a full-time gifted education option housed at Hancock Elementary School . Students are provided an individualized and differentiated curriculum this more complex, in-depth, and at a faster pace taught by a GIS. Activities are designed to respond to the unique learning and developmental needs of cognitively gifted children.

Independent Study Program – Night of the Notables, Grades 3 & 4

Offered to all students identified as gifted, regardless of area

Through this program, students are taught the research process while conducting an in-depth study on a topic of their choice. Classes meet weekly with a GIS. This program will begin second semester and will culminate with a public showcase of projects at Adams Junior High in April.

Independent Study Program - Independent Study Fair, Grades 5-8
